POWER FILLED CHRISTIAN LIVING

PART 1-THE POWER OF THE WORD OF GOD

INTRODUCTION

The power that belongs to God is stored in the eternal resource of His own Word–The Bible! Our God is the God of all power! If we wish to draw upon His power, we must not neglect His Word! (Hebrews 4:12)

Martin Luther once said, “The Bible is alive, it speaks to me; it has feet, it runs after me; it has hands, it lays hold of me.” (Martin Luther, “Martin Luther–The Early Years,” Christian History, no. 34.)

Frank Minirth of the Minirth & Myer Clinic said, “Living the Word of God is much more basic to helping people than psychology will ever be.”

(Frank Minirth, Leadership, Vol. 1, no. 4)

I.            THE WORD OF GOD HAS THE POWER TO CONVICT MEN OF SIN!

               (Acts 2:37; 5:33; 7:54; Romans 7:9; 1 Corinthians 14:24-25)

When we look back at what produced this deep conviction of sin, we will find that it was the Word of God preached by Peter and Stephen in the power of the Holy Spirit!

It is the Word of God, used by the Spirit of God, that pricks men’s hearts and minds!

Author Mark Twain once said, “Most people are bothered by those Scripture passages which they cannot understand. But for me, the passages in Scripture which trouble me most are those which I do understand.” (Mark Twain, Christian Reader, Vol. 33, no. 5)

               A.         It Produces Conviction In The Sinner That Can Bring Them To Salvation!

               B.         It Produces Conviction In The Saint That Can Bring Them To Sanctification!

II.           THE WORD OF GOD HAS THE POWER TO GIVE NEW LIFE (REGENERATE)!

               (John 6:63; 1 Peter 1:23-25; James 1:18)

We are to sow the seed of the Word of God and water the seed that has already been planted in order to see the increase that is produced by God! 1 Corinthians 3:6–“I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.”

If a farmer doesn’t plant seeds, he will never harvest a crop. It doesn’t matter how weed-free his ground is; he must also plant and cultivate good seed.

In the same way, we can only reap a harvest of purity and integrity by planting the good seed of God’s Word into our lives!

The new birth is simply God imparting to us a new nature–His Divine nature!

The Word of God is the seed out of which God’s Divine nature springs up in the human soul!

III.         THE WORD OF GOD HAS THE POWER TO PRODUCE FAITH! (Romans 10:17)

We do not get faith by merely praying, by an effort of our will, or by trying to generate it in any way!

Faith is the effect of the Word of God in the soul!

               A.         The Word Produces Saving Faith.

                            (Acts 16:30-34; John 7:17; 20:31)

We must do more than tell folks they must “believe,” we must give them something for their faith to rest upon!

i.e. The Word Of God!

The Word can even dispel the doubts of the skeptic!

                            (John 20:31; John 7:17)

               B.         The Word Produces Prevailing Faith!

                            (Mark 11:24; 1 John 5:14-15)

The only way to have a faith that prevails in prayer is to study your Bible, know the will of God and the promises of God, and present them to God!

               C.         The Word Produces Victorious Faith!

                            (1 John 5:4; Ephesians 6:16; Hebrews 11:33-34)

Victorious faith over the world, the flesh, and the Devil!

Feed your faith steadily on the Word of God! In every respect it is true that “faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God!”

IV.         THE WORD OF GOD HAS THE POWER TO CLEANSE!

               (Psalm 119:9; John 15:3; Ephesians 5:25-26)

The Word of God has the power not only to take impurities out of the heart, but to cleanse the outward life as well!

If you want a clean outward life, you must wash often by bringing your life into contact with the Word of God each day!

Do you bathe spiritually each day?

V.           THE WORD OF GOD HAS THE POWER TO BUILD UP!

               (Acts 20:32; 1 Peter 2:2; 2 Peter 1:5-7)

R.A. Torrey once said, “The great trouble today is that we have too many one-story Christians because of their neglect of the Word.”

Christian Johnson said, “A Bible that’s falling apart probably belongs to someone who isn’t.” (Christian Johnson, Men of Integrity, Vol 1, No. 1)

VI.        THE WORD OF GOD HAS THE POWER TO GIVE WISDOM! (Psalm 119:130; 2 Timothy 3:16-17)

There is more wisdom in the Bible than there is in all the other literature of the ages! The man who studies the Bible will possess more real wisdom than the man who reads every other book and neglects the Bible!

VII.        THE WORD OF GOD HAS THE POWER TO GIVE ASSURANCE OF ETERNAL LIFE! (1 John 5:13; John 3:36)

The assurance of eternal life comes through what is “written!”

A person who is not sure of his or her salvation should focus on what the Word of God says rather than on feelings or misplaced hopes!

VIII.      THE WORD OF GOD HAS THE POWER TO BRING PEACE INTO THE HEART!

               (Psalm 85:8; 119:165; Isaiah 26:3; Romans 8:28)

You may be looking for peace, longing for peace, or praying for peace. However, peace of heart comes only from the Word of God!

Romans 8:28, if fed on daily until it becomes indelibly written in our hearts, should banish all anxiety forever! If we really believe it and the reality of it takes hold of us, there should be nothing that will disturb our peace!

IX.         THE WORD OF GOD HAS THE POWER TO PRODUCE JOY! (Jeremiah 15:16; John 15:11; Romans 15:4)

Fullness of joy comes through the Word of God!

As we feed on the Word of God and allow it to become engraved in our hearts by the Holy Spirit, true joy is kindled and glows in our hearts!

X.           THE WORD OF GOD HAS THE POWER TO PROTECT US FROM ERROR AND SIN! (Acts 20:29-32; 2 Timothy 3:13-15; Psalm 119:11; Matthew 4:4, 7, 10; James 4:7)

Neglect of God’s Word has left many believers prey to the many false doctrines that Satan is trying to infiltrate the Church with!

Neglect of God’s word has left many other believers easy prey to the temptations of the world, the flesh, and the Devil!

If Jesus, the perfect Son of God, overcame Satan by the Scriptures, how much more should we, with our sinful flesh, do the same in our lives?”

To each of Satan’s temptations, Jesus replied, “It is written. . .,” afterward, Satan left Him!

James 4:7 , tells us to submit ourselves to God and to resist the Devil and he will flee from us!

XI.         THE WORD OF GOD HAS THE POWER TO GIVE US AN INHERITANCE AMONG ALL THEM WHICH ARE SANCTIFIED.

               (Acts 20:32; Ephesians 1:11-14; Colossians 1:12; 1 Peter 1:3-4)

Conclusion

It is evident from what we have seen that the first step in obtaining fullness of power as a Christian is to immerse ourselves in the Word of God!

Psalm 1:1-3

We need to delight in the Word of God! We need to read it, study it, memorize it, meditate upon it!, digest it, believe it, and allow it to become a living reality in our lives!

There can be no power filled life and service if the Bible is neglected!

A filling of the Spirit that is not maintained by a persistent study of the Word will soon vanish! We must constantly feed on the Word if we wish to obtain and maintain fullness of power!
