WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT PRAYER–PART 1
Introduction
Prayer is one of the most important doctrines or teachings of the Bible. Prayer is essential to worship and to maintaining a proper Christian life. Prayer is also the means of making the petitions of one's heart known to God. Prayer is essential to Christian joy. True prayer testifies to the Believer's attitude toward the supernatural attributes of God. We should open our hearts to God’s Word on prayer and allow the Holy Spirit to teach us how to pray.
I. THE MODEL PRAYER CONSIDERED. (Matthew 6:5-13)
A. Prayer Is A Personal Matter Between The Individual Believer And God. (6:5b)
B. Prayer Should Not Be Some Formal Creed Or Formula. (6:7-8)
C. Prayer Should Recognize The Fatherhood Of God. (6:9a)
D. Prayer Should Recognize The Revered Position Of God. (6:9b)
E. Prayer Should Be Made For The Kingdom Of God To Prevail On Earth. (6:10)
1. This Involves Praying For The Second Coming Of Christ.
(Cf. Revelation 22:20)
2. This Involves Praying For The Work Of God In The Churches And In The Hearts Of Men In This Present Age.
F. Prayer Should Recognize Our Dependence On God For Our Daily Needs. (6:11)
G. Prayer Should Recognize Our Responsibility To Others. (6:12)
(Cf. Romans 14:7-9)
H. Prayer Should Recognize Our Need For Divine Leadership. (6:13)
II. PRAYER IS COMMANDED BY GOD.
A. Prayer Should Be Offered Persistently. (Luke 18:1-8)
B. Prayer Should Be Offered “Without Ceasing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:17)
C. Prayer Should Be Offered Rather Than Worrying. (Philippians 4:6)
D. Prayer Should Be Offered For All Men. (1 Timothy 2:1)
E. Prayer Is An Essential Part Of The Christian’s Armor. (Ephesians 6:18-19)
1. Prayer Should Be Made In The Spirit.
2. Prayer Should Be Made Perseveringly.
3. Prayer Should Be Made For All The Saints.
4. Prayer Should Be Made For Men Of God.
III. PRAYER IS ESSENTIAL TO FRUITFUL SERVICE. (John 15:7-8)
A. Prayer Is Involved In The Believer Being In The Will Of God.
1. Prayer in Jesus's name presupposes a right relationship with Jesus.
2. Prayer presupposes faith in and surrender to God's will.
3. Prayer presupposes at least a limited knowledge of God's Word.
4. Prayer presupposes Holy Spirit leadership.
B. Prayer Involves God And His Attributes In The Work.
1. Prayer recognizes that Believers are instruments in God's hands.
2. Prayer recognizes that Believers are involved in a Spiritual warfare that can only be won by spiritual means.
IV. PRAYER IS GOD’S MEANS FOR CHRISTIANS TO GET THEIR NEEDS SUPPLIED. (James 4:1-3)
A. Wars And Fightings Among Christians Come From Their Lusts. (4:1)
1. Wars and fightings considered.
a. Literal wars and fightings.
b. Strifes between church members.
c. Internal strife.
2. Such wars and fightings come when the old nature rather than the new nature controls us.
B. Wars And Fightings Continue Because Of Prayerlessness. (4:2-3)
1. Unscriptural or selfish prayer is not really prayer.
2. God desires to give Believers the things that will further the cause and kingdom of Christ.
3. God desires to give Believers the things that will further their own personal spiritual growth.
4. God will not grant that which is sought for the wrong motives.
5. God will not withhold any good thing from the Believer.
V. PRAYER IS THE MEANS OF CHRISTIANS OBTAINING FULLNESS OF JOY. (John 16:23-24)
A. “That Day” Is The Age Of Grace.
B. The Father Is Asked In Jesus’ Name.
(i.e. On the basis of the believer having been identified with Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection.)
C. The Father Desires To Answer Our Prayers So That We Can Experience The Fullness Of Joy In Our Salvation.
D. Prayer Is One Of The Truly Great Privileges Of Believers And Should Be Utilized In Every Phase Of Life.
1. Prayer should be utilized in regard to our personal Christian life.
2. Prayer should be utilized in regard to our Church life.
3. Prayer should be utilized in regard to our jobs.
4. Prayer should be utilized in regard to our school life.
5. Prayer should be utilized in regard to our home life.
VI. PRAYER IS GOD’S MEANS OF CURING WORRY AND ANXIETY.
(Matthew 6:25-31; Philippians 4:6-7; 1 Peter 5:7)
