BIBLE DOCTRINES
WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT PRAYER–PART 3
THE NATURE OF PRAYER
Introduction
The disciples spent a lot of time with Jesus. They saw His miracles, but they did not request that power. They heard His teaching, but they did not request that ability. They saw Him pray and that is what they desired most.
God talks to us through the Bible. We talk to God through prayer. Just as the Bible is inspired by the Holy Spirit and has Christ as Its central theme, so also acceptable prayer must be in the Holy Spirit and in the name of Christ.
Luke 18:1–“And He spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint.”
Romans 12:12–“. . .continuing instant in prayer. . .”
Ephesians 6:18–“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;”
1 Thessalonians 5:17–“Pray without ceasing.”
Anyone in the Bible that did anything of consequence in the work of the Lord had an active prayer life.
There are many different types of prayer mentioned in Scripture all of which are needed at various times in the life of the Christian.
I. CONFESSION OF SIN.
1 John 1:9; Psalm 32:1-6; Daniel 9:1ff; Nehemiah 1:4-11; Luke 18:9-14
II. SUPPLICATION FOR ONESELF.
A. Deliverance From The Penalty Of Sin.
To confess sin and ask for salvation is the only prayer that God entertains from the lost sinner.
B. Deliverance From The Power Of Sin.
This should be a daily part of the Christian’s prayer.
Luke 11:4–“. . .lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.”
Psalm 3; 103:1-4; James 1:5
C. Deliverance From The Presence Of Sin.
Luke 11:2–“Thy kingdom come.”
Mark 13:33–“Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.”
Revelation 22:20–“. . .Even so, come, Lord Jesus.”
III. INTERCESSION FOR OTHERS.
A. Prayer For Deliverance From The Penalty Of Sin.
Romans 10:1–“Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.”
1 Samuel 12:19-25
B. Prayer For Deliverance From The Power Of Sin.
Colossians 4:12–“Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, saluteth you, always labouring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God.”
James 5:16–“Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed.”
Acts 12:5-9, 12
IV. THANKSGIVING AND PRAISE TO GOD.
Ephesians 5:19-20–“Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; 20Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;”
Philippians 4:6–“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”
Hebrews 13:15–“By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.”
1 Thessalonians 1:2-3–“We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers; 3Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father;”
2 Thessalonians 1:3–“We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth;”
V. COMMUNION WITH GOD.
1 John 1:1-7
Genesis 5:24–“Enoch walked with God.”
Psalm 4:4–“Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed.”
Communion can be defined as our talking to God and God talking to us.
