BIBLE DOCTRINES
WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT PRAYER–PART 4
THE ORDER AND BASIS OF PRAYER
I. THE ORDER OF PRAYER
A. WE PRAY TO GOD THE FATHER.
John 15:16–“Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.”
John 16:23–“And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.”
Luke 11:2–“. . .when ye pray say, Our Father. . .”
Ephesians 3:14-16–“For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, 16That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;”
Luke 11:9-13 illustrates the Father-child relationship.
B. WE PRAY THROUGH GOD THE SON.
That is, we pray through the Lord Jesus Christ and in His name.
John 14:13-14; 15:16; 16:23-24
Ephesians 2:18–“For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.”
1.When We Pray “In His Name,” We Pray By Salvation Or For Salvation.
Ephesians 2:13–“But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.”
2. When We Pray “In His Name,” We Pray In Dependence On Christ.
The Father answers prayer because of Christ’s merit, not ours.
The Father answers our prayer for Christ’s sake.
The Father answers our prayer because of Christ.
3. When We Pray “In His Name,” We Pray Such Prayer As Christ Himself Would Offer.
a. Not a selfish, covetous, or lustful prayer. (James 4:1-3)
b. But rather prayer according to the Word of God.
John 15:7–“If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.”
C. WE PRAY BY (OR IN) GOD THE SPIRIT.
Ephesians 6:18–“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;”
Jude 20–“But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,”
Galatians 4:4-6
Romans 8:15, 26-27
II. THE BASIS OF PRAYER.
How is it possible for us to pray and expect to receive and answer to our prayer?
We Can Pray Expectantly:
A. Because Of Our Relationship To God.
Romans 8:15–“5For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.”
In the New Testament, prayer is based on our relationship to God as His children.
This relationship is not only as children, but as adult children because of adoption.
B. Because Of The Blood Of Christ. (Hebrews 10:19-22; Ephesians 2:13)
C. Because Of The Promises Of God.
Solomon prayed in 1 Kings 8:26–“And now, O God of Israel, let thy word, I pray thee, be verified, which thou spakest unto thy servant David my father.”
D. Because Of The Priestly Ministry Of The Lord Jesus Christ.
(Hebrews 4:14-16)
