BIBLE DOCTRINES
WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT THE LORDSHIP OF JESUS CHRIST
JOHN 13:13
Introduction:
The Lordship of Christ is among the most important teachings for Believers.
When Jesus Christ is accepted as Saviour, He is also to be accepted as Lord of all.
Lordship involves belief and obedience. It is a matter of believing what is taught about Christ in Scripture and obeying those things that He teaches we are to do.
It has been said, with much truth, that if Jesus is Lord at all then He is Lord of all.
I. THE LORDSHIP OF CHRIST DEFINED.
A. Lordship Is Mastery. (Matthew 23:8-12)
1. Believers are the bondslaves of Christ. (Cf. Deuteronomy 15:16-17)
Romans 6:22–“But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.”
2. Believers are to do the will of Christ their Master.
Luke 6:46–“And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?”
B. Lordship Is Ownership. (1 Corinthians 6:13-20; 7:22)
1. As our owner, Christ has the right to do with us as He sees fit.
(Luke 17:7–10)
2. As those who belong to Christ, our will should be subject to His.
C. Lordship Is Superiority. (Colossians 1:15-21)
Christ is our superior and demands that our wills take the inferior place.
1. He Is Superior In His Person. (Vs 15; Hebrews 1:1-3; 6)
“Image” means “likeness” and implies “representation and manifestation.”
Jesus is “the express image” or “the exact representation” of the Father’s being.
2. He Is Superior In His Pre-existence. (Vs 15b; 17; John 1:1-3; 8:58; 17:5)
1 Corinthians 8:6–“But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.”
Christ preceded the whole of creation.
Christ is sovereign over all creation.
3. He Is Superior In His Power. (Vs 16-17)
Acts 17:26–“. . .For in him we live, and move, and have our being;. . .”
Romans 11:36–“For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.”
4. He Is Superior In His Purchased Possession. (Vs 18)
He is the head of the Church!
Acts 20:28–“. . . the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.”
5. He Is Superior In His Preeminence. (Vs 18; Philippians 2:9-11)
The word “preeminence” is defined by Webster as:
a. Superiority in excellence.
b. Superiority in precedence–priority of place; superiority in rank or dignity.
c. Superiority of power or influence.
6. He Is Superior In His Plenitude. (Vs 19; 2:3, 9;)
His fullness or completeness.
John 3:34–“For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.”
Ephesians 1:3–“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:”
7. He Is Superior In His Peacemaking. (Vs 20-22)
Isaiah 9:6–“The Prince of Peace.”
Romans 5:1–“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:”
Ephesians 2:14–“For he is our peace. . .”
II. THE LORDSHIP OF CHRIST IS DEMANDED.
A. His Personage Demands Lordship.
1. He is God incarnate. (John 1:1; 10:30-31; Hebrews 1:8)
2. He is perfect in His humanity. (John 8:46; Hebrews 4:15)
B. His Salvation Demands Lordship.
1. His salvation is a free gift that cannot be earned.
(Ephesians 2:8-9; 1 Peter 1:18-19)
2. His salvation provides forgiveness of sin and freedom from
condemnation. (Colossians 1:13-14; Romans 8:1; John 3:18)
C. His Mission Demands Lordship.
1. His mission is to reach the lost. (Luke 19:10; Matthew 28:18-20)
2. Man's salvation is dependent on the success of His mission. (2 Cor. 4:3-4)
3. Believers should allow Him Lordship in order to facilitate the carrying out of the mission. (Acts 1:8)
D. His Judgment Demands Lordship. (2 Corinthians 5:9-11)
1. Believers will be judged for their work as Christians.
2. Christ will call for an accounting of our failure to submit to Him as Lord.
III. THE LORDSHIP OF CHRIST DISALLOWED.
A. The Reasons For Disallowing.
1. Indifference to Christ disallows Lordship.
People or things take precedence.
2. Indifference to the lost condition of the world disallows Lordship.
3. Love of the world disallows Lordship.
4. Sin disallows Lordship.
5. The idea that God's will is a harsh taskmaster disallows Lordship.
B. The Results Of Disallowing.
1. The Believer will lose blessings.
2. The Church will be less effective.
3. Satan will make accusation against the Believer.
4. The Believer will never experience the will of God that gives real purpose to life.
IV. THE LORDSHIP OF CHRIST DECIDED.
A. It Means A Decision To Submit.
1. The Believer must submit his will to Christ.
2. The Believer must discipline himself to set aside his personal desires in order to do what God would have him do.
B. It Means A Decision To Satisfy.
1. The Believer must determine that God is the One who must be satisfied rather than man.
2. God will be satisfied when we respond in kind to His love.
C. It Means A Decision To Serve.
1. Christ Himself set the pattern of service.
2. The Believer is saved to serve God and man.
3. True discipleship means a life of serving, not being served.
D. It Means A Decision To Sacrifice. (Romans 12:1-2)
1. Christ Himself was the ultimate sacrifice.
2. Believers should give themselves sacrificially.
3. Believers should give of their time sacrificially.
4. Believers should give of their talents sacrificially.
5. Believers should give of their substance sacrificially.
Conclusion:
Lordship can be summed up in the words of C. T. STUDD, "If Christ be God and died for me, there is nothing too great that I can do for Him.
