UNDERSTANDING AND DOING THE WILL OF GOD

PART 3--PROVING THE WILL OF GOD

Introduction

Last week we spoke of the general will of God as revealed in Scripture.

1.         The Will Of God Is For Us To Be Saved.

2.         The Will Of God Is For Us To Be Sanctified.

3.         The Will Of God Is For Us To Be Submissive.

4.         The Will Of God Is For Us To Be Willing To Suffer Gracefully.

5.         The Will Of God Is For Us To Be Thankful In Everything.

Many ask the question, “Does the Lord have a special and individual will just for me?”

The answer is an unqualified, “Yes!”

God has a personal, performable, and provable will for each believer.

            1.         It is personal–custom tailored just for us.

            2.         It is performable–it can be accomplished in our lives with God’s help.

            3.         It is provable–as we obey God it becomes evident to others and to us.

It becomes plausible and possible only when we have brought our lives into conformity with the vital practices that comprise the general will of God.

I.         HOW CAN I PROVE THE WILL OF GOD FOR MY LIFE?

Every believer who presents his body as a “living sacrifice” to the Lord has the explicit possibility of proving “what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

There are three important things that are necessary before we can “prove” the will of God in our own lives.

            A.        Proving The Will Of God Requires A Voluntary, Meaningful Surrender And Commitment Of Our Bodies To The Lord.

Our bodies are the vehicles given to us for expressing the will of God here on earth.

            B.        Proving The Will Of God Requires A Turning Away From World Conformity.

                        1.         We Turn Away From The World’s Standards.

                        2.         We Turn Away From The World’s Pursuits.

            C.        Proving The Will Of God Requires A Renewal Of Our Minds.

                        1.         Every Believer Is To Cooperate Fully With The Plan And Program Of God.

                         2.         God’s Will Is To Be Expressed In And Through Us.

                        3.         Our Hearts, Will, And Mind Must Be Activated In Yielding To Him.

II.       WHAT DOES GOD EXPECT FROM ME AS AN INDIVIDUAL BELIEVER WITH REGARD TO HIS WILL FOR ME?

            A.        God Requires That I Actively Yield My Will To His.

            B.        God Requires That I Exercise Faith And Obedience In Response To His Leading Through The Holy Spirit.

            C.        God Requires That I Follow Through On The Directions He Reveals.

Once I know God’s will, He expects me to do it.

I must wholeheartedly respond to implement what is revealed.

            D.        God Requires That I Make Use Of Time, People, Circumstances, And Providential Events To Determine His Will And To Stay Within It.

            E.        God Requires That I Be Honest With Myself And With Others.

God is not interested win playing games about His will.

These ideas formulate a package rather than a step-by step approach to knowing and doing the will of God. We must work on all of these points at once.

The personal preparation that is essential in knowing and doing the will of God is not a mechanical process, but an attitude and activity of the heart.

We are not ready to know and do His will until we:

            1.         Have dealt severely with self.

            2.         Made the mind active in pursuit of holiness.

            3.         Overruled all objections to Christ’s Lordship.

            4.         Have knowingly and lovingly submitted to Christ as a servant does to his master.

Conclusion

God does have a purpose and plan for each one of us.

He makes it known to the seeking heart.

We are responsible for yielding to God’s will and doing it.
