SEVEN CHARACTERISTICS OF GOD’S PEOPLE

JOHN 17:11; 21-22

INTRODUCTION

The greatest people on earth are the blood washed, blood bought people of God.

We have been called out of this world’s system and brought into fellowship with Holy God.

As God’s people we are destined for glory and blessing.

Let’s look at seven characteristics of God’s people:

I.         As Disciples, We Are In The Same School With One Master. (Acts 20:7)

Every true believer is, in a sense, a disciple. However, some believers have not made the progress that they should have made in spiritual development and surrender during the time in which they have been saved..

The word "disciple" suggests a "follower or learner."

(Example–Different kind of students in a classroom)

Luke 6:40–“The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master.”

Matthew 10:24-25–“The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord. It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord.”

            Luke 14:26-33

The early disciples sought to bring people to Christ and disciple them, because that is what they were commanded to do by the resurrected Savior. (Matthew. 28:18-20).

We have the same task today. In doing so we obey the Great Commission

II.       As Children, We Are In the Same Family With One Father. (John 11:49-52)

We who are born again are designated as the children of God.

All saved people are God’s children who share the same divine life. The trouble is that all children do not develop spiritually to the same degree.

Some are babes, some young men and others fathers.

III.      As Sheep, We Are In The Same Flock With One Shepherd. (John 10:16)

We are likened unto sheep because we need both direction and defense.

Jesus, as our Shepherd tends to the flock with similar care as did the devout eastern shepherd. The sheep can hear the Lord’s voice and should obey His bidding. (John 10:27)

IV.      As Saints, We Are In The Same Covenant With One Calling. (1 Corinthians 1:2)

"Saints" means God’s "set apart, consecrated, holy people."

All saints are called to holiness, but some walk more holy in their talk and lifestyle than others do.

A saint is a follower of the Lord Jesus who has been "set apart" to live for God.

V.        As Stones, We Are In The Same House With One Foundation. (1 Peter 2:5)

All of God’s people are as living stones upon one foundation, but some are more prominent in the building than are others.

Ephesians 2:19–23

VI.      As Members, We Are In The Same Body With One Head.

            (Romans 12:5; 1 Corinthians 12:12-13)

All saved folks are in the body of Christ, but some have higher offices and are given more honorable places.

VII.     As Fellowcitizens, We Are Destined For One City.

Ephesians 2:19–“Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;”

Hebrews 11:10–“For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.”

Hebrews 12:22-23–“But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,”
