THE LOVE OF GOD

Introduction

There are many things that we could study about God.

We could talk of how vast God is. (He’s omnipresent. He’s bigger than the universe.)

We could talk of how smart God is. (He’s omniscient. All of creation shows His wisdom and knowledge.)

We could talk of how powerful God is. (He’s omnipotent. Think of the power unleashed to bring forth creation.)

We could talk of many other things about God and we could not exhaust the subject, we could only begin to scratch the surface of His person.

This morning I want us to look at just one attribute of God, and even in doing that we cannot exhaust the subject of this one attribute. That attribute is His love.

I want to give you ten things about the love of God:

I.           GOD’S LOVE IS UNDERLYING. “For God so loved. . .”

God’s love underlies His nature. i.e. The basis of God's love is His nature.

1 John 4:8 "He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love...”

1 John 4:16–“And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him"

God is love; therefore, He loves. He acts, demonstrates, and shows His love.

II.         GOD’S LOVE IS UNADULTERATED. (i.e. UNPOLLUTED, PURE)

              (1 Corinthians 13:4-8)          

III.        GOD’S LOVE IS UNPRECEDENTED.

God was the very first one to love and no one can love like Him.

              God’s love is not like out love or the love of others in this world.

God didn’t decide that He was going to love us because we loved Him.

              1 John 4:19–“We love him, because he first loved us.”

IV.        GOD’S LOVE IS UNBIASED. “For God so loved the world .”

God doesn’t love the world system or the world’s sin, but he does love all of mankind.

As a child I was taught the song “Jesus Loves The Little Children.”

                          “Jesus loves the little children,

                          All the children of the world,

                          Red and yellow, black and white,

                          They are precious in His sight,

                          Jesus loves the little children of the world.”

              God’s love applies not only to children, but to all age groups!

              God’s love applies not only to one race, but to all races!

God’s love applies not only to the middle class, but to the rich and the poor!

              God’s love applies not only to the powerful, but to the weak!

God’s love applies not only to the popular, but to those who are despised by others!

              God’s love is universal!

IV.        GOD’S LOVE IS UNRIVALED (AND THEREFORE, UNSURPASSED)

Thank God we can know love from any number of people in our life:

                          The love of parents.

                          The love of friends.

                          The love of a spouse.

                          The love of our children.

                          The love of our grandchildren.

However, no one has ever loved us or ever will love us the way that God loves us!

V.          GOD’S LOVE IS UNDESERVED.

Romans 5:6-8–“For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. 8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

              We come to love people for different reasons. 

              Sometimes it is because of:

                          relationship

                          fellowship

              But, God loved us when were at enmity with him.

Romans 5:10–“For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.”

When the relationship with man had been broken because of sin, God made a way for it to be restored.

VI.        GOD’S LOVE IS UNSELFISH.

              Romans 5:8–“. . .Christ died for us.”

1 John 3:16–"Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us."

1 John 4:9–"In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him."

VII.       GOD’S LOVE IS UNDERESTIMATED. 

I have had folks ask me, “Preacher, do you think God could love me?”

A question like that shows a person who doesn’t understand the greatness of God or His love.

I’ve had other folks just plainly state that they did not believe God could love them. They underestimate the love of God.

Someone once put it this way, “God can save from uttermost to the guttermost.”

VIII.     GOD’S IS UNFEIGNED. 

Some folks say they love you but their actions show something different.

Some folks pretend to love, but in the end their supposed love reveals itself as hypocritical.

God’s love is not hypocritical! His love is genuine! His love is real!

IX.        GOD’S LOVE IS UNQUESTIONABLE.

There should not be any question as to whether God love’s us or not!

God, who cannot lie, has left us his infallible Word declaring that He loves us!

              God, proved that love with the blood of His only begotten son.

X.          GOD’S LOVE IS UNENDING. (i.e. UNDYING, UNFAILING, AND UNCEASING)

              His love is eternal! It is as eternal as God! It is everlasting!

Conclusion

God so loved that He gave.

The love of God will do a sinner no good unless he knows about it!

Romans 10:13-15–“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. 14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent?”

We who have experienced God’s love must show others God’s love and tell others of God’s love.

We can only do that because we are partakers of His Divine nature!

The love of God will do a sinner no good unless he responds to it!
